AI Mock Interview: What It Grades and What It Misses
An AI mock interview scores structure, pace and filler words well, and domain judgement badly. Here is how the tools work, what they cost and how to use them.

An AI mock interview asks you a question, records or transcribes your answer, and returns feedback within seconds. That loop is the real product. It is available at any hour, it never gets bored of your fourth attempt at the same story, and it removes the social cost of being bad in front of a person. What it grades reliably is the observable surface of your answer: length, pace, filler words, whether you covered the situation, action and result, whether you mentioned the terms the role usually expects. How does an AI mock interview actually work?
Four steps, in every tool worth using.

The practical consequence: treat an AI score as a rough proxy, not a verdict. A tool telling you your answer was 40 seconds too long is a fact. A tool telling you your answer was “strong” means only that the transcript contained the expected shapes.
Are AI mock interviews better than practising with a person?

How do you get useful feedback out of an AI tool?
Six habits that raise the signal.
- Paste the real job description in. Generic prompts produce generic scoring.
- Answer out loud at normal speed. Typing your answer defeats the purpose.
- Read the transcript first, before the score. Fix transcription errors in your head before you accept the feedback.
- Run the same question three times, not three different questions once. Improvement is only visible on repeats.
- Ignore any advice to add more keywords if it makes the sentence sound unnatural. A human interviewer hears stuffing instantly.
- Save the version you liked. Most tools do not keep a clean answer library for you.
